Midrand police on railway duty in West Street in President Park, arrested a man for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition on 31 July at about 2pm.
“The police saw a man carrying a black plastic bag and became suspicious, so they decided to stop him and search the plastic bag which resulted in an AK-47 being confiscated after it was found in the packet along with magazines and 47 rounds of live ammunition,” said Midrand police’s acting spokesperson Constable Thabiso Selowa.
“The man was arrested on the spot and during the investigation, the police found information that the man had previously been arrested for a similar charge and that case was still pending.”
The 26-year-old suspect from Mayibuye, John Radebe, appeared in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on 2 August. Radebe was denied bail and is expected to appear again on 13 August, meantime he will be detained at the Johannesburg Central Prison.
