Equine clinic reminds equestrians to check horseboxes after pony severely injured in road accident

KYALAMI – The clinic said unfortunately, there was nothing they could do to save the pony as her internal injuries were too severe.

The Fourways Equine Clinic has taken to its Facebook page to remind ‘horsey peeps’ to ensure horseboxes have indicators, brake lights and tail lights that are in full working order and to drive at a reduced speed when towing a horse.

This comes after a horsebox towing a pony was involved in an accident this week.

The Facebook post reads: “We had the misfortune of admitting a pony yesterday [3 October] that had been involved in a horsebox accident. We must mention that the horsebox was roadworthy and the tail lights, brake lights and indicators fully operational. Unfortunately, a truck driver failed to notice the vehicle waiting to turn and ploughed into the back of the horsebox.”

“This is a reminder to ‘horsey peeps’ to firstly ensure that your horsebox has indicators, brake lights and tail lights in full working order. Ensure that your vehicle is serviced regularly and that it is roadworthy. Drive at a reduced speed and with caution,” said the clinic.

“For people reading this post that do not tow, or have no association to the industry – have some consideration when following behind a horsebox. Keep a safe following distance, DO NOT HOOT and exercise some patience when behind someone driving slower than you would care to.
