PAULSHOF – It's a new year, and that means the potential for a new you! Read some helpful tips from fitness enthusiast Sinako Dunywe ...

According to research compiled by Nielsen, a global information and measurement company which collects data from consumers in South Africa and around the world, the most frequent New Year’s resolutions have to do with improving one’s health.
But how do we achieve this in 2019? Sinako Dunywe, a Joburg North resident and fitness enthusiast has some helpful advice for those wanting to get healthier:
What are your expectations?
“This is a great time to think about what you want to achieve with your body [in the new year],” said Dunywe. “Do you want to lose weight? Build muscle? Become healthier? Prepare to take part in a marathon? Knowing what you want to achieve before you set out is very important, and you must be sure your goals are realistic.”
New Year’s resolutions are great, but be careful
“You need to crawl before you can walk. In terms of New Year’s resolutions, people have these massive, audacious goals that they set themselves. You should make sure your goals are smart and something you can achieve. You can still challenge yourself, just be careful about going overboard.”
Don’t do it alone
“Don’t be afraid to ask for help from a friend, spouse or family member, as they can hold you to account for the things you said you’d do, and give you motivation if you lose it.”
Don’t be afraid to get expert advice
“A lot of people will be joining a gym in the new year. I’d say the first thing that they should do when they get there is get help from people who know what they are doing, and how to avoid injuries. You don’t have to hire a personal trainer, there should be professionals at your gym who can help you make sure that you don’t injure yourself while exercising.”
Be careful with diets
“If you’re going to be starting a new diet, make sure that you get advice from a professional, someone who knows what they are doing. What will work for your goals and your body type? Only eating one grape a day is not a good idea.”
Here’s to a healthier 2019.
