Time to check your ears
MIDRAND – The Midrand Lions Club and various Rotary clubs join hands to change the face of hearing awareness.
The Midrand Lions Club and the Rotary Young Professionals of Sandton are set to kick off the hearing awareness campaign.
The initiative is a joint partnership with the Rotary clubs in Morningside and Fourways and other Lions clubs in Pretoria, to change the face of hearing awareness for the future.
The yet-to-be-named campaign has a number of fundamental objectives in terms of awareness around hearing loss, particularly where the youth are impacted.
President of the Midrand Lions Club, Cliff Hocking said World Hearing Day, a WHO initiative, is taking place on 3 March with the theme of ‘Check your hearing’.
The intention is to run a number of local campaigns during the month of March.
“Many children and their families are simply not aware that there may be a hearing issue which obviously impacts on their ability to learn to speak initially and on learning down the line,” said Hocking.
“It is estimated that 1.1 billion people worldwide are affected by hearing loss of which 32 million are children. The WHO estimates that untreated hearing loss costs the global economy $750 billion [about R10 trillion] per annum.”
Hocking added that there is, therefore, a need to stem the increase of hearing loss through awareness campaigns and basic remedial action at pre- and primary schools which is where the Lions and Rotary initiative will be focusing initially.
