Midrand SPCA gives an update on the overturned vehicle carrying chickens
MIDRAND – Midrand SPCA were met with devastation when they arrived on the scene.
Midrand SPCA assisted after a truck carrying chickens overturned on the N1 South near Allandale Road on February 28.
According to the Midrand SPCA Facebook page, they were assisted by Sandton SPCA and Kempton Park SPCA who sent out their vehicles, as their own vehicles are still broken.

It was a difficult task for Midrand SPCA to get to the accident scene as the emergency lanes were blocked with vehicles. Once they managed to get through they were meet with devastation as many of the chickens were crushed to death. They had to perform many emergency slaughters on some of the chickens.

Some injured chickens were reloaded and taken back to the SPCA. Grand Central Veterinarian, Dr Edward Evans inspected all the chickens, unfortunately, more chickens had to be put down. At the scene, staff even had to crawl under the truck to get some chickens out who tried to flee or hide.

On the issue of their vehicles, the statement read, “Our society is really battling without vehicles at this point in time and today just proved once again the crucial need for vehicles. Over 100 chickens lost their lives today. If our colleagues could not have reached us at the accident scene, the situation would have been a lot worse!”
They are in urgent need of donations for new vehicles, if you are able to assist, please visit the Midrand SPCA Facebook page
Midrand SPCA also thanked all those who helped to save as many animals as they could.
