Department of Home Affairs extends working hours to 9pm on Election Day
JOBURG – The department's spokesperson explained that those who had lost their ID documents through natural disasters must liaise with their local councillors who would liaise with the department to make necessary arrangements for free documents in order to vote.
The Department of Home Affairs has extended working hours in all their offices for provision of ID documents during the elections period.
Spokesperson for the department, Siya Qoza, revealed that Home Affairs offices would operate until 9pm on 8 May. “We have extended our working hours to accommodate people who would need temporal ID certificates or collection of IDs for voting. On 8 May, we will open offices at 7 am and close at 9pm,” said Qoza.
Qoza said those who have lost their ID documents through natural disasters must liaise with their local councillors who would liaise with the department to make necessary arrangements for free documents in order to vote.
He revealed that 450 people in KwaZulu-Natal and 250 in the Eastern Cape who lost their IDs during the floods have been issued with temporal ID certificates. A further number of 50 people in the Western Cape who lost their documents through fires have also been issued with temporal documents.
“Those who have also lost their IDs in other incidences and cannot for some reason afford to pay for a new document, they can liaise with their local councilor who will establish what kind of assistance is available at the Home Affairs,” added Qoza.
