Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital urges motorists to be careful while driving around wildlife areas
MIDRAND – Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital calls on motorists to drive carefully in and around wildlife areas.
The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital has urged motorists to be careful when driving around wildlife areas, especially during rainy periods.
This comes after a female giant bullfrog was hit by a car while trying to cross the road. The bullfrog was badly injured and taken to the Wildlife Veterinary Hospital.
“X-rays revealed a fractured pelvis, tibia and lower jaw. We called on the expertise of exotic specialist vet Dr Dorianne Elliott from the Bird and Exotic Animal Hospital in Onderstepoort,” Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital said.

“She was delighted to assist with the frog’s fracture repair, who in the meantime was affectionately named Fiona by Dr Elliott’s vet nurse, Sr Soné. Her broken lower jaw was fixed with wire and her broken right hind leg was fixed with external fixation.”
The hospital said the multiple pelvis fractures healed with time as she was kept still. It added that Fiona recovered well and was taken to a safe bullfrog breeding property.
“Please drive carefully in and around wildlife areas, especially during rainy periods. You may not know what is around you on the roads and you could accidentally hurt or kill some of our precious wildlife.”
