There is a lot of good out there

MIDRAND – Friends Millicent Kgeledi and Lerato Raisibe team up to raise donations to help the people of KZN after floods.

According to Midrand community member Millicent Kgeledi, a common myth exists in a society that the private sector mostly takes from communities but never gives back – but that myth has been proved wrong.

After reports of the KwaZulu-Natal heavy rainfall that destroyed homes and killed more than 30 people, Kgeledi and her friend Lerato Raisibe wanted to do something to help those affected by the tragedy.

“In a matter of days, I got a commitment from my colleagues at the African Union Development Agency, who donated money, clothing items and other goods for victims, including covering the transportation costs to go down to KwaZulu-Natal to deliver the items,” Kgeledi said.

She added, “I was blown away by the amount of help we got from Superspar Vorna Valley. I worked with the store manager a few days before we left for KwaZulu-Natal. The store had donated groceries that were so necessary for the victims and their upkeep. They donated more than I had expected.

“After getting enough donations and leaving for KwaZulu-Natal on 30 April, we partnered with Red Cross to ensure that that the support was filtered down to the deserving beneficiaries.”

Kgeledi said that she realised at that moment that in times of crisis like this, human beings to come together to comfort each other.

“The displaced victims will be accommodated in Umlazi Q Community Hall for three to six months, while safety assessments of the area are done.

“Support for them, in the form of food, toiletries, clothing, school books, and stationery is still necessary.”
