City educates Rabie Ridge residents on environmental health by-laws
RABIE RIDGE – The campaign aims to educate residents on the number of services the environmental health unit has.
The City of Johannesburg Environmental Health officials is busy with the second phase of their environmental health awareness campaign and were joined on 8 October by MMC for Health and Social Development, councillor Mpho Phalatse in Rabie Ridge.
Phalatse said, “The City remains committed to protecting the environmental health and welfare of residents. Together we must maintain a healthy and safe city, as well as foster a culture of safeguarding our environment.”
Residents were informed and educated on the number of services the environmental health unit has, such as health surveillance of food premises, food control water quality monitoring, vector control, chemical safety and disposal of the dead and waste management.
Phalatse said it is important for environmental health practitioners to conduct inspections to not compromise the health of unsuspecting residents.
The campaign in Rabie Ridge led to several shopkeepers being issued fines for failing to meet a number of by-laws.
The MMC added that the campaign seen in the area will happen citywide to ‘sensitise residents on what steps to take when confronted with issues which may pose risks to their health’.
Region A residents who want to report any suspicious environmental health issues can contact their environmental health practitioner Jacques Scholts on 011 237 8002; 082 467 9292.
