Tragic ending for puppy

CLAYVILLE – A rescue mission ended in heartbreak with the death of a puppy that fell into a drain.

A puppy died after being trapped in a small drain in Clayville on 14 October.

General manager of the Midrand SPCA Pam Pretorius said that the organisation’s inspector, Jerry Seemise, received a call at 7.30am where a puppy on private property had apparently crawled into a small drain.

The Midrand SPCA team rushed to the house in Clayville.

Pretorius said that they heard the puppy’s cries but they stopped a bit later.

The Midrand SPCA received help from a local drain cleaning service who assisted with a snake camera in four different drainage pipes to try to find the puppy but due to the collection of waters, roots and debris, they could not trace it.

The SPCA carried on digging until they finally found the puppy but, unfortunately, it was already dead.

Pretorius added that the owners of the home handed over the remaining group of puppies and are planning on having the mother sterilised.

She said, “I would like to appeal to the community, who have young animals to keep their gardens safe and to close up their drainage entrances.”

She also urged community members to get their big dogs sterilised.
