Coca-Cola South Africa together with the Johannesburg Metro Police Department took to the K101 and Allandale Road intersection on 29 October to launch their #FixItNow campaign.

The campaign is focused on road safety and aims to teach motorists about staying safe on the roads as the festive season approaches.

Metro police officers together with staff members of the beverage company handed out pamphlets on road safety and making sure one’s car is roadworthy while also giving out cooldrinks to motorists.

Officer Xolani Fihla, speaking on behalf of the Metro police, added that they have embarked on the campaign with Coca-Cola South Africa which focuses on educating and engaging with motorists about road safety as the festive season was around the corner.

“We are heading towards the festive season, a time when there is usually a lot of carnage on the roads.

“We just took a step before the festive season starts to engage with the motorists and to keep on pumping the message that road safety is of the utmost importance and that we have to have road safety 365 days of the year.”

Fihla added that JMPD officers and members of Coca-Cola have been issuing out pamphlets for road safety and urging motorists to not to give a Metro police officer a ‘cooldrink’ (a phrase commonly used when offering a bribe)].

“Instead, with the help of Coca-Cola, we are giving motorists and commuters cooldrinks. We are closing the gap, we do not want any corruption, we want officers who are fully committed in doing their jobs,” Fihla explained.

“We urge motorists to obey the rules of the road and, most importantly, not to drink and drive because it is one of the biggest killers for our motorists on the road. Don’t forget to put on your seat belt and don’t text and drive.”

Pirtunia Dlamini, the public affairs and communications manager at Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa in the Gauteng region, added that for a company with a national footprint and a huge fleet, they felt it was important to take part in an activity such as this and a campaign that seeks to make people aware of road safety. “Safety is a key and very important part of how we do business, we want to make sure that we are safe as employees and our drivers are safe, as well as other road users.

“So, really, we are creating awareness around being safe on the road, taking care of your fleet and making sure that everything is fixed before you get on the road.”

Dlamini added that the campaign is educational and aims to encourage the right behaviour, “One of the pamphlets we were giving away is around anti-bribery, as a business we believe in doing business the right way – with integrity. We want to make sure that bribery also stops.”
