Nērmai foundation helps upgrade Anton Hartmann Park

VORNA VALLEY – Local NGO N?rmai Foundation planted cleaned up and planted trees at Anton Hartmann park.

The  Nērmai Foundation gave back to the Vorna Valley community by cleaning up and planting trees in Anton Hartmann Park on 16 November.

The work done by the foundation followed the installation of fencing around the park by Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo.  Spokesperson for the foundation, Cherante Subramoney said they became involved following an invitation to take part in the upkeep of the park from Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe.

She added that they cleaned up the park following the weekend activities and items removed included fireworks boxes, bottles, cans and plastic packets. Along with the team of City Parks who they consulted, they identified trees that needed to be replaced in the park and replaced three trees and planted a new one.

Subramoney said the trees planted were celtis africana and white stinkwood. “Trees help with climate change by removing carbon dioxide from the air, storing carbon and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere. This may not be a silver bullet in tackling climate change immediately, but it is definitely a step closer to getting our communities to where we need to be.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to add value in our community. We will always find a way to assist… We should all do what we can do in order to get to a desired outcome that is beneficial for the entire community.”

Deppe said, “Only if more NGOs like  Nērmai show an interest in the community’s well-being we would be much better off. As we all know, the council cannot do all these extras. So thank you to Nermai and the team for there support.”
