The Gauteng Department of Education is encouraging parents and guardians to familiarise themselves with the systems and processes availed for public school applications for 2022.
MEC of Education Panyaza Lesufi said that this year’s application process has changed to make it easier and more manageable for parents, guardians, and public schools in Gauteng.
Applications for Grade 8 have now closed, while applications for Grade 1 for 2022 will open on September 13 and will close on October 8.
Lesufi added, “When a parent or guardian applies to a school for their child, it is critical to remember that the following criteria is considered in order of priority of the following: home address within the school’s feeder zone, siblings and or previous schools, work address within school’s feeder zone and home address which is within 30km radius.”
The placement of phase 1 (Grade 8) will happen between October 15 and November 30 while phase 2 will be between November 15 and November 30.
According to Lesufi, parents/guardians can expect to receive SMSs notifying them about the outcome of their application between October 15 and November 30, 2021, to which they must accept or reject any offer to confirm placement.
The department is aware that not all applicants have internet access and have therefore identified 47 decentralised walk-in centres in different areas where applicants will be safely assisted. Additionally, some district offices and the head office will serve as walk-in centres and information on these sites will be made available to the public via the Gauteng Department of Education website and social media platforms.
