Motorists are warned to check vehicles are locked properly

MIDRAND – Constable Eliot Mabulane, spokesperson for Midrand Police Station, said most of the incidents relating to theft out of motor vehicles occurred at shopping centres.

Midrand Police Station has raised concerns over the rising number of cases related to theft out of motor vehicles.

The spokesperson for the station, Constable Eliot Mabulane, said these crimes occurred more at shopping centres.

He added that some suspects gained access to the vehicles freely due to the fact that, in some instances, owners forgot to lock their vehicles. “You would find that the owner left the sunroof open or exposed their valuable belongings such as laptops, jewellery, cellphones, and expensive clothing,” he added.

Mabulane appealed to shoppers and residents in Midrand to lock their vehicles using their cars’ central locking systems. “Do a manual check to see that, indeed, your car has been locked and do not make it obvious to the public when you lock by pointing towards your vehicle as you press your key.”

He added, “Please, refrain from assisting criminals to commit such crimes. And we warn criminals that once they are arrested, we will, with the power vested upon us by the Constitution, impose harsher sentencing.”
