Who your new mayor is

JOBURG – New Mayor a golf lover with a handicap of 13.

Mpho Moerane has been elected as the new City of Johannesburg executive mayor.

Moerane was born in Alexandra and matriculated at Minerva High School. He completed an electrical course and went on to earn a project management certificate from the School of Project Management. Moerane had a stint as an electrician, working for national power utility Eskom until 2006 before venturing into full-time entrepreneurship.

He has also served on the boards of Metro Bus, Alexandra Clinic and currently serves as a non-executive director for Chancellor House Holdings. In his younger days, Moerane fought alongside the Congress of South African Students in the turbulent 80s before joining the ANC Youth League.

Prior to joining the City of Johannesburg, Moerane, who grew up surrounded by entrepreneurs in his family, ran his own businesses. He is also the African National Congress Joburg’s Regional treasurer and worked as the head of fundraising in the office of the treasurer-general.

During his tenure as MMC, Moerane aimed to put in place measures that guaranteed power supply for the city’s five million residents by negotiating a new power purchase agreement with Kelvin Power Station, and exploring battery storage and waste to energy options to mitigate the effects of load-shedding by Eskom.

In an effort to get rid of crime and grime in the city, Moerane also launched the #KleenaJoburg campaign with effect from January 2020 in Alexandra. The campaign seeks to mobilise citizens, business, industry, labour, civil society and the government towards a common goal of actively participating in cleaning up of the environment and ensuring that law and order is maintained.

He is married to Fikile who is an IT and financial services consultant, and they live in Bryanston with their four children. Moerane is also a golf fan but has had to scale down his playing time due to the demands of being a councillor and MMC but still boasts a handicap of 13.
