Local history explored
MIDRAND – Kamoraleng Institute took guests on a tour of different places around Midrand of historical importance.
Kamoraleng Institute ended Heritage Month by exploring different hidden gems with esteemed guests during their first-ever Midrand tour.

The organisation, which explores the history of Africa through documenting and taking people on tours of different locations, hosted the Ndebele Chief Delisa Macingwane from Siyabuswa, legendary showjumper Enos Mafokate and other guests on their tour of Midrand on September 30.

The group began their tour at the rocky Boulders Shopping Centre site, moving to Grand Central Airport and ending at the Orchards Executive Accommodation.

Founder of Kamoraleng, Develd Monyai said, as everybody was celebrating Heritage Day in September, the purpose for the tour was to close the month by familiarising people with Midrand’s places of attraction.

Monyai said, “We want people to see the hidden beauty of the Midrand city. For example, in the Boulders Shopping Centre, the upcoming generation should know what is happening there because no one has ever told that story. Only through us are people going to learn that there are hidden gems they can freely visit. We felt we had to document that story and tell the generation to come about the history of our area.”

Chief Delisa Macingwane, said he learned a lot from the tour and that it’s important that people know where they come from.

He said, “Midrand is a place of history that happened around the 1400s before we came to this area. One must remember that we [Africans] come from North-East Africa and then we went to East Africa…

“Midrand knows how to bring people together, the place has a history. A lot of people only know the Midrand they see, they do not know that the place was named Halfway House before.”
