Christ Church College swimmers begin the year on a bang
NOORDWYK – Director of sports and culture at the school Alviro Peterson said this year's focus would be on an increase in positivity, participation, and overall improvement of the sport.
The Christ Church Preparatory School and College’s swimming team kicked off the year by perfecting their swimming skills.
The school’s team of swimmers attended a week-long pre-season boot camp on January 3 to prepare them for the upcoming swimming season.
According to the school’s marketing manager, Dawn Schmitz, the camp started off with time trials.
“Each day was then dedicated to a different stroke. Each stroke was broken down, going through each technique to create muscle memory. During breaststroke training, a tennis ball was placed between the chin and the chest to keep the correct 45-degree angle, ensuring that the swimmers do not lift their heads too high, which slows them down. This resulted in lots of fun and laughs,” Schmitz added.
Looking back at last year, with the pandemic halting most sports due to Covid-19, the school’s director of sports and culture Alviro Petersen said they did not participate in any individual galas, which was disappointing. “When restrictions were lifted towards the end of the year, we only had two weeks to start practising for the relay team galas. We pulled together as a team, worked hard, and participated well in the relay galas, thereby ending the season on a high,” said Peterson.
Peterson expressed high hopes for the new season. He added that they would like to implement an increase in positivity, increase in participation, and overall improvement of the sport. “Our focus areas are to go [back] to basics and focus on good technique, stamina, and strength. Our goals are to encourage and motivate all our swimmers to be the best they can be and to maintain a high standard of participation in all areas of swimming.”
The camp concluded on January 7 with the second set of time trials. This allowed the learners to see their improvement throughout the week.
