Baobulb invites youth for acting auditions

PRESIDENT PARK — Those who wish to attend the auditions are encouraged to prepare any kind of acting piece for their audition.

Midrand-based theatre company Baobulb Drama Academy will on February 19 and 26 host an open day for auditions in their after-school and Saturdays Speech and Drama programme.

The auditions will be held at Miriam Makeba Centre for Girls in President Park A/H, with the academy under the leadership of renowned drama coach, director, and playwriter Brian Jokozela actively discovering, nurturing, and exposing the dramatic talents of young aspiring actors.

As a dramatic arts coach, Jokozela has introduced and trained many actors who are doing very well in the industry today, including Kayalami-based Naledi Rerayi, who starred in the SABC 2 drama series Guilt.

Among his other co-signs are Midrand-based, Zizo Sobutyu, who is currently in SABC 1’s youth drama Skeem Saam, and actor-director Gifter Ngobeni, who hails from Rabie Ridge.

“The future of our nation depends on our ability to create and be creative. If our nation is to continue to meet the challenges of society, we need to develop creative leaders,” Jokozela said.

It is urged that those wishing to participate in the auditions prepare any type of acting piece they wish, such as a solo piece, monologue, poem, or acting in pairs.

“Audition pieces may be extracts from the text the learners do at schools or pieces from professional work you know or your own writing,” Jokozela explained.

Auditionees will also have an opportunity to have a one-on-one brief interview with the director on the day, and those who pass will be trained by Baobulb and entered into eisteddfods, schools competitions, and festivals across the country.

Baobulb aims at using applied drama methods to bring out the creativity of our young learners. In 2020 the Gauteng Department of Education, Johannesburg East District, awarded Jokozela the Best Arts and Cultural School Coordinator of the year.

“Dramatic arts education is an important means of stimulating creativity in problem-solving. It can challenge learners’ perceptions about their world and about themselves. ‘Tell me and I will forget. Show me and I will remember. Involve me and I will understand’ that is the philosophy and attitude of Baobulb Drama Academy,” Jokozela concluded.
