Mother and daughter work hard to make the world a better place
Asa Karriem (61) said she wanted to give back to the community by filling up potholes.
A local food parcel distributor in Midrand is aiming to recruit young learners in the area to repair potholes on various roads.
Not only does she feed the underprivileged, now Asa Karriem (61) said she wanted to give back to the community by filling up potholes.
“My next plan is to fill potholes [and get learners involved] to make them aware of community service and get them involved in helping build our country… I want to also develop them [so they can] use their free time in a more productive way.”
When asked what prompted her to start the food distribution, Karriem said she could not enjoy her meals knowing that there were hungry people out there.

Karriem handed out 300 food parcels (100 per suburb) in Carswald, Vorna Valley and Samrand on March 26.
“My biggest hope for the food distribution is to change lives and hope to get support from anyone so that we can give more. The only time I feel sad and disappointed is when the food parcels run out and the queue stretches for miles. It just brings tears to my eyes.”

Karriem said she had approached businesses to help fund her initiative but had no success as yet.
She added the only funding she received was from her daughter Zaybuneesa Karriem who gave her a portion of her salary every second week of the month.
