A Midrand-based artist and his friend were hijacked and robbed by three armed men in Halfway Gardens on April 5.
Bayanda Hector (34), popularly known as Midciti Urban Artist, was relaxing with his friend in his car at about 20.00 when a maroon Toyota Yaris passed them outside his friend’s place.
He said shortly after the car had passed, he was surprised when it made a sudden U-turn before stopping and the three occupants approached his vehicle.
He added the men were armed and yelled at them to get out of his Toyota Etios. They took his friend’s cellphone and bracelet before his friend managed to escape.
Hector said he was forced into the back seat of his vehicle and was driven around for about an hour by two of the men who kept on asking for his banking details.
He said the two then met up with their accomplice who was driving their vehicle at an unknown location and transferred him into their Yaris before dumping him off on the M1 near the Buccleuch interchange.
“While trying to locate where I was, I saw a big company [network provider] and went there to request a security guy to lend me his cellphone to make a call. Luckily, he lent me his phone and I called my family members to inform them what had just happened.”
Fortunately, his car was found on the same day in Alexandra by tracker officials and taken away to check for fingerprints.
Midrand police spokesperson Constable Eliot Mabulane confirmed the incident and added that they were probing a case of hijacking and theft.
“Police have gathered intelligence and undercover operations to try make a breakthrough in this case. To add on that, all possible video footage will be viewed to trace all three suspects.”
