Cedarwood learners enjoy creative learning activities as part of Maths Indaba Week

The Math Indaba Week ensures that calculations are taught consistently and helps teachers assist learners who require additional aid.

A Kyalami-based school has developed specific educational programmes to meet its learners’ needs.

Cedarwood School held its first Maths Indaba Week from May 30 to June 3. The rationale of the Maths Indaba Week is stipulated in the schools’ maths calculation policy, which demonstrates how different forms of calculation are taught at the school.

Maths Indaba Week is organised by grades and designed to ensure progression and a smooth transition from one grade to the next. It ensures that calculations are taught consistently across the school and is an aid to teachers in helping children who need additional support.

This policy is also available to help parents, carers and other family members support their children’s learning.

The school marketing manager Lisa Ellis said the learners thoroughly enjoy the Maths Indaba Week as they participated in stimulating and fun activities through the use of concrete, pictorial and abstract methods of teaching and learning maths.

All learners earned Cedarwood Bucks for their participation as well as for accurate answers. They could use these to purchase toys, sweets, or different gadgets at the Cedarwood maths shop. “Through this activity, learners also learn to manage their ‘money’ and budget accordingly,” said Ellis.
