Pikitup frantically erect temporary depot to appease workers to return to work

Region A Pikitup depot manager Donal Radingoana says if workers do not cover the lost time by Friday (May 27), then they will be ought to work throughout the weekend.

Region A Pikitup workers will have their hands full when they return to work to compensate for the lost time following a three-day sit-in.

The workers who staged a sit-in from May 20, only returned to work on May 25 at about 12:00 after reaching an amicable agreement with their employer.

About 350 employees from the region were demanding an operational depot in the region as currently they had to report to work at the Midrand depot which was too far and costly for them.

Most of the workers are from Kaalfontein, Ivory Park and Rabie Ridge, and joined forces with their Diepsloot colleagues in the protest.

Midrand Pikitup depot manager Donald Radingoana said, “Workers did communicate with us about the desire of having their own depot but due to internal processes, everything took to time to materialise. If I am not mistaken, they raised this last year around October or November. Indeed, we have a backlog but we will try our best to recover the lost time and will go as far as working on the weekend so that we start Monday [May 30] on a clean slate.”
He said he was particularly concerned with the backlog of refuse collection in Glen Austin, President Park, Ebony Park and Kaalfontein.

Midrand Pikitup depot had listened to the workers’ concerns and was preparing a site where a permanent depot would be constructed in Region A.

Anthony Selepe, general and communications manager at Pikitup said, “The backlog matter will be dealt with accordingly and for us now is to focus on the development of the new depot which the workers have been demanding.”

The workers’ representatives and leaders refused to share their side of the story.
