Bridge Town beats JT Black Stars to become champs of Winter Games

Despite scoring only six goals throughout the tournament, the champs also had a strong defence that conceded only three goals

Another edition of the Lerato Lamola Winter Games soccer tournament has come and gone with Bridge Town boys crowned champions.

The knock-out tournament took place from May 28 to June 18 and saw 32 teams go head-to-head at Lord Khanyile Hall sports ground for a prize of R70 000.

The tournament was made possible by a number of sponsors including Tau Energy Drink, Use’Bench’ni No Monga, Hollywoods Bets, Tabco, Lerato Lamola Foundation, Uhuru Lounge, and the Local Football Association, among others.

Ridge Ndlovu, the tournament coordinator thanked each and every single person who had made this prestigious tournament a success.

“Thank you for your continued support in making sure that these games are a success. To the community of Ivory Park, KAE [ Kaalfontein, Allandlale, Ebony Park], Tembisa, and surrounding areas thank you.”

A thrilling 1–1 draw during 90 minutes of play led to Bridge Town’s championship win on June 18 when they won 3–0 on penalties against JT Black stars.

The champions began their road to the championship against Liverpool in their first match and won 1–0. In the round of the last 16, Bridge Town was drawn against Tembisa sports centre and the champions won 1–0 again to go into the quarter-finals.

The quarter-final match saw a 2–2 score between Bridge Town and Bayekane with Bridge Town going on to win 5–4 on penalties to book a spot in the semi-finals where they manage to beat Risannah FC 1–0.

“Reflecting back at what transpired from May 28, it is really humbling and it gave us an indication of what we can achieve,” Ndlovu concluded.
