Midrand LFA general secretary shares his big plans for the association

The general secretary of Midrand Local Football Association (MLFA) has big plans up his sleeve and hopes to execute all of them in his four-year tenure.

Luyolo ‘Aphakamile’ Leo Mafuna (40) also known as Leon was elected in his position on April 23 after ousting Makarina Mokoena who is now his deputy.

Mafuna vowed to work hard to ensure the administrative work of the association progresses beyond the field of play.

He said he was excited about the new MLFA executive committee, and being at the centre of everything as the secretary makes it more fascinating.

“I have learned to be calmer and more hands-on in order execute the secretarial duties. I believe secretary is an engine of any executive to function. I cannot allow emotions to cloud the responsibility entrusted to me by the members of the association,” said Mafuna.

The ambitious father of three said he wanted to set up a team of administrators from all the clubs in the association, and offer accredited administration short courses for them.

Mafuna has been with the association since 2018. “Since then, most members of the LFA realised that I am capable of bringing total transformation. I want to administrate a programme to develop young talent on how administration works. This is in line with the directive from the South African Football Association Johannesburg Regional to include children from the ages of 13 to17 years in administration programmes.”

Born in the Eastern Cape, Mafuna explained the Aphakamile name.

“It is a royal name as I am royalty coming from Amagcina royal clan in Queenstown in the Eastern Cape. The full name is Aphakamile Amagcina simply because I was born of hope, and the clan does have high hopes that I will indeed drive them to better heights.”
