Midrand police under the command of Brigadier Molefi David Tsotsotso have managed to secure 47 convictions for various offences since June this year.
Eighteen suspects were convicted of shoplifting, three for theft, two for gender-based violence, one each for drunk and driving, armed robbery, possession of the stolen property, business break-in, domestic violence, trespassing, theft of a motor vehicle, tampering with infrastructure, and 13 for being illegal immigrants.
In the case of tampering with infrastructure, Gerald Sekoloane was given seven years’ imprisonment. In the case of armed robbery, Minenwe Mbele was handed down a 12-year prison sentence..
In other cases such as the business break-in, the convicted was given three years direct imprisonment, and two-month to six-month sentences were handed down for illegal immigration, drunk and driving, theft and assault.
“We believe that these convictions will serve as a deterrence to those that are transgressing laws and are warned to deviate from breaking one. We will at all times work towards serving, defending the Constitution, and protecting the rights of our citizens,” said Constable Eliot Mabulane, spokesperson of Midrand police.
