Beaulieu College to feature in Top 12 hockey tournament
Ending their season at seventh in the country, Beaulieu College’s first team girls will be eager to achieve a high result in the Top 12 tournament in Bloemfontein.
A local high school’s first team hockey girls are preparing hard for an upcoming tournament from August 4–8 in Bloemfontein with other top hockey teams in the country participating.
Beaulieu College’s first team girls have been ranked number seven in the country, which has now qualified them to take part in the upcoming Top 12 tournament where the first 12 teams in rankings will play against each other. Currently, Oranje Meisies of Bloemfontein rank number one.
Head of hockey at Beaulieu Liz Ashmore expressed her pride in the team and their achievements. She mentioned the girls had been hard at work in the beginning of the year to be ready for the season.

“The coach and the team are ecstatic about achieving this milestone – it is the most significant sporting achievement in our school’s history and the team are very excited to be able to compete against the top teams in the country when we travel to Bloemfontein for the Top 12 tournament.”
In the recently concluded season, the team enjoyed an unbeaten season, winning 21 of their matches. They scored more than 100 goals and only conceded seven, and have achieved wins over strong schools such as Waterkloof, Garsfontein, Noordheuwel and St Stithians. Ashmore said this was the epitome of the team punching above their weight.
“We are exceptionally lucky that the school supports our hockey team so tremendously, and we are privileged to be associated with the Allistar Fredericks Hockey Development Trust. The trust provides scholarship opportunities for hockey players to attend Beaulieu,” Ashmore told Fourways Review.

Even with school sports affected multiple times by the lockdown regulations in the past few years, players were still able to keep up their match fitness by playing for various indoor and outdoor teams at a club and provincial level.
Ashmore added a number of players in the team were on the path to success in the sport with them taking part in interprovincial tournaments and at franchise level for the Joburg Hockey League. These players include Tamika Kock, Paris-Gail Isaacs, Alyssa de Sai, Alex Bennett and Hannah Gerber.
She also made special mention of 2020 alumnus and player for Beaulieu College, Tamlyn Kock for her representation for South Africa in the Junior World Cup in Potchefstroom in April.
