Fat Cats launch 2022 race marathon post Covid-19
Fat Cats Athletic Club is adamant the October marathon will be fun for whole family members and families urged to being their siblings.
Allandale Road and Lone Creek Crescent will be painted red in October when the marathon fraternity converges on the streets for the first time since the Covid-19 outbreak.
Marathon running social club Fat Cats Athletic Club launched their fourth instalment of the road running race dubbed ‘a run for the whole family’ at Waterfall City on June 23.
The inaugural run was held in 2019 before Covid-19 forced 2020 and 2021 to be held virtually. Planned for October 9, the club expects about 2 500 to 5 000 participants to paint Waterfall City red on the day.
Fat Cats Athletic Club chairperson Vongani Mashile said, “The technical aspects of the day will include the main race which is a 10km race and it is one of our flagships, a 5km fun run, kittens’ miler [a 1.6km race for children from six to 14 years old} and nappy dash [for toddlers].”
He said it would be a fun-filled day for the whole family and urged everybody participating in bringing along their families.
Race director and the vice-chairperson of the club Channelle van Wyk said the club participated in different races which included marathons, The Comrades and ultra-marathons.
“So with Fat Cats, our DNA is built on family values and not only our immediate families but also our surrounding communities. The idea is always to encourage and uplift our communities through running and uplift them through our Corporate Social Investment,” said Van Wyk.
Corporate Social Investment chairperson of the club Modikwe Sebola said, “A portion of profits and proceeds raised on the day will be donated to local schools in the form of school uniforms.” In addition, they would donate sanitary pads to girls in need.
The registration portal will be opened on June 24.
