Music and entrepreneurship blend well for Waterboy
The 20-year-old feels an album, especially a debut one, should be a body of work that blends together perfectly with a storyline that connects all the songs.
It takes enormous sacrifices to make a career out of music, and Ivory Park entrepreneur and artist Thato Chris Mahasha, better known as Waterboy iamOdd, knows that well.
Known primarily for his hip-hop music and sometimes soul, Waterboy is also the director of New Age Influence.
“New Age started when we saw a need in the management of creative arts,” said Waterboy. “We are situated where there is a lot of talent brewing, so we hope we can expose every single talent and make a sustainable career out of it.”
The 20-year-old said one of his subjects in high school was music, and he saw a need to start a career at a very young age, composing music and hosting rap events.
“My biggest highlight is hosting events in my early teen years. Funnily enough, at my last one, bouncers kicked me out of my own event.”
Although he has over 30 unreleased songs that he can select for his debut album, he feels an album, especially a debut one, should be a body of work that blends together perfectly with a storyline that connects all the songs.
He hopes to build and maintain a sustainable career and be part of the pillars of balancing and growing the South African music industry. Currently, he is partnered with public relations company, Abikay Communications to manage his brand.
Having started his academic career at Ivory Park Primary School, Waterboy went on to study at Eqinisweni High School and matriculated in 2019. After matriculating, he did two years of a marketing course at Boston College, but due to lack of funds he dropped out, and in 2022 he resumed his studies with Unisa.
“Young people should study and work hard. There is no success that comes with laziness, only poverty and slavery comes with not wanting to learn.”
He defines a successful person in the music industry as someone who owns all the copyright and royalties to their music.
“We are still building a solid background for New Age Influence, but as for my music, it is accessible on every digital streaming platform.”
