21 local children have an opportunity to compete at the national championships

The children are in need of sponsors and donations prior to the championships.

The South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association will hold its national championships in Polokwane in October this year and 21 girls of the Rabie Ridge Drummie team will compete.

Having been retrenched from work, Sanet Thindisa started the team in May last year with the wish of empowering young girls individually and to reach their full potential through the sport, whether it be emotional, social, physical, or cognitive.

“I remember when I was a drummie myself, it used to give me a sense of belonging since having coaches who care for you gives hope because, for some children, this sport is an escape from reality,” said Thindisa.

Thindisa added they required sponsorships and donations before the event as they needed to pay for food, transportation and accommodation for the 21 drummies.

“We also do not have team tracksuits for the girls in order to show the team they are representing. You know in our types of communities, it is difficult for households to take money out of their pockets, especially if it is a large amount.”

This will be the first time the Rabie Ridge drummie girls will compete in the championships, and the team is willing to perform at events in exchange for donations.

The girls are aged between eight and 13 and will travel with Thindisa as the head coach and Gizelle Brooks as her assistant coach.

Details: To assist the team with donations locals are encouraged to call Thindisa on 072 636 4709.
