General secretary aims for 100% success in his new role

While the focus is mostly put on sports development in the field of play, Midrand Local Football Association general secretary Luyolo Mafuna wants to focus on administrators' development.

The general secretary of the Midrand Local Football Association (MLFA) said he would stand in the association’s 2026 elections as there was a dire need to equip upcoming sports administrators.

Luyolo Mafuna (40) believes continuity is vital for any LFA’s growth if they are to reach their true potential of developing the sport.

Mafuna, who has been with the association since 2018, said anything less than 100% would be considered as a failure for him as he intended to achieve more than 100%.

“If the outcome is what we expected, I will indeed stand for the next AGM elections in 2026 for the secretary-general position. I believe continuity is vital in achieving more, and four years is not enough to transform the MLFA,” said Mafuna.

Mafuna holds various qualifications from various institutions including a hotel and catering management diploma, advance lecture training certificate, call centre management certificate and Bachelor of Commerce in supply chain management.

“I realised the skills gap from 2018/2019 and I wanted to draft a proposal for the 2019/2020 season but Covid-19 clouded everything. “Now that I am in office, I want to revive that goal. I want to set up learnership programmes for sports management, law in sport, facility management etc. There is a huge skills gap, hence, we witnessing little development in the areas around Midrand.”

He concluded he also wanted to ensure the development of upcoming referees and also women’s football.
