Graduates learn how to find employment after graduation

Information shared included building a competitive CV and mock interviews.

The IIE’s Varsity College Waterfall, Sandton, Pretoria, and IIE MSA alumni recently gathered at the IIE MSA in Roodepoort for a graduate employment workshop.

Apart from informative training in the workshop, the graduates also received a few tips from keynote speakers on how to stand a greater chance of finding employment after graduating.

Among the speakers were Boitumelo Mothibeli, founder of Diphetogo Consulting; Njabulo Buthelezi, motivational speaker of the Institute of Advanced Cyber Defence; and Lerato Mathibela, training officer at Nedbank.

Komape Rapudi, a fourth-year IIE Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Psychology graduate said they gained so much knowledge from the workshop.

“Something that struck a chord with me was me realising that not all moments in life define us. Being unemployed does not mean I haven’t achieved anything. I am a graduate and that in itself is a success,” said Rapudi.

Information shared in the workshop included building a competitive CV, mock interviews, networking after graduation especially on LinkedIn, and how to remain motivated and professional.

Speaking to the graduates Mothibeli said, “LinkedIn is one of the most important platforms to use when networking after graduation. Networking means remaining connected. The fastest growing segment on LinkedIn is young people.”

Buthelezi added that it took time to be successful, but time was not an indicator of success. He encouraged the graduates not to be hard on themselves as there was a time for each of them to shine.

Mathibela said, “Be prepared when you enter the interview room. Know how to answer any question that is thrown your way. Practising interviews before an actual interview will help calm your nerves, boost your confidence and refine your communication skills.”
