Waterstone thrash Christ Church 8–1 to reach final
The U16 soccer team suffered a humiliating semi-final defeat as they allowed eight goals to slip by.
Waterstone College’s soccer team advanced to the finals of the U16 Independent School Soccer League (ISSL) after defeating Christ Church Preparatory School and College 8–1 on July 27 at Randburg Football Club.
As the match got underway, Waterstone’s Kwanda Nkosi was denied by Christ Church’s shot-stopper, Tshidiso Moboa, before Boikanyo Lekgwathi broke the deadlock to give Waterstone the advantage.
As Christ Church lost possession of the ball easily, Levi Watkins and Nkosinathi Nhlapo scored goals in quick succession to put Waterstone firmly in charge of the match.
Watkins got his second goal on 30 minutes with a sublime strike, cutting inside and finding the top corner to make it 4–0 for Waterstone.
Waterstone goalkeeper Andrew Khumalo frustrated Christ Church’s attack by denying Lesedi Njonge and then keeping a couple of clean shots out of the goal.
Dakalo Tshinyani added his name to the scoresheet with two minutes to half-time, bundling in a half volley from Nhlapo’s in-swinger cross.
In the second half, Christ Church looked sharp as they were awarded a penalty and Njonge calmly converted it. However, Waterstone’s Thandolwethu Vuma slotted in a powerful shot that Moboa couldn’t handle.
After 63 minutes, Watkins completed his hat-trick through a looping shot that found Moboa out of possession.
Neo Nxusa added the final touch for Waterstone with a brilliant strike from a tight angle.
Waterstone coach Mduduzi Ndlovu was impressed with his boys’ performance. “The boys played well especially as they had not trained together this term because they had just come back from the June holidays. But [they] managed to follow the instructions.”
Waterstone will face off againts Curro Wilgeheuwel in the finals of the ISSL U16 on August 3.
