Sanca Midrand tackles drug abuse in San Ridge Square

Midrand police and Sanca join hands to tackle and combat the scourge of GBV and drug abuse.

Midrand police and South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (Sanca) jointly held an awareness campaign on substance abuse and gender-based violence.

The campaign was held at San Ridge Square in Noordwyk on July 14.

Police focused on the scourge of gender-based violence while Sanca, whose major objectives are the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders, addressed and tackled drug abuse.

Sanca Midrand Ke Moja (I am fine) coordinator Andisani Makhadi said it was critical to address the issue of drug and substance abuse to build a safer and progressive society.

“So because we are basically a rehab clinic, what we have picked up in Midrand and its suburbs, is that about 70% of drugs that are used here are those that people call ‘rich man’s drugs’ which are your crystal meth and codeine among others,” said Makhadi.
“We were sharing information with the community at large about substance abuse and gender-based violence. Parents, guardians and teachers needed to be aware of behavioural patterns of their children.”

Midrand police spokesperson Constable Eliot Mabulane said, “We all know the seriousness of substance abuse in our community, and as police and Sanca, we want to ensure that we educate the broader community about drug abuse. We want everyone to know the long and short term effects [of drugs], while attending to the gender-based violence scourge.”

Sector 3 Crime Forum chairperson Marvin Maphiri and patrol commander Otto Ramokoka were also in attendance.
