Kyalami harpist qualifies for the prestigious Hubert van der Spuy National Music competition

Grade 7 learner at Kyalami Preparatory School Lily Weissenberger will be one of 15 musical learners from Gauteng to take part in the prestigious Hubert van der Spuy Competition in Cape Town.

A Grade 7 learner from Kyalami Preparatory School has qualified to participate in a national music competition for her harp playing.

Set to take place on September 26 to 30, Lily Weissenberger will be attending the Hubert van der Spuy Competition in Cape Town. The competition has 34 participants, with one coming from Namibia. Lily is one of 15 participants from Gauteng who passed the audition round.

Lily began playing the harp in 2016, and is currently working on her Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) harp performance Grade 4 exam.
She had also taken part in the National Harp Festival in 2018 and 2019, where she was awarded honours in the novice category, a gold plus diploma in the junior category and ‘most promising harpist’ in each respective category.

The competition spans back to 1989, which was inspired by musician Prof. Hubert van der Spuy who was also former chairman of the South African Society of Music Teachers (SASMT) Tygerberg.
The competition offers young music learners the opportunity to learn from one another in a competitive environment, ensure a high standard of performance, and compete at a national level.

SASMT Tygerberg chairperson Hilda Boonzaaier said there is a wave of excitement for the upcoming competition.
“We are excited to invite a number of worthy students to the competition this year. We were happy to hear during the online auditions the good work being done all over the country. We salute the teachers, students and parents for their input, hard work and encouragement.”

The competition has four rounds where each performer will compete in the first two rounds. From there, 22 participants will be chosen for the third round. Eight will then be chosen for the fourth round.
The Kyalami Preparatory School learner has also participated in the Kids with Talent SA music competition and placed first in her category in both the regional and final rounds. Lily is an active member of the school band and performs regularly in school concerts.
