Economic group works to attract investors

Lisa Tele, the secretary for the empowerment group, said, “Our main objective remains getting the local small businesses empowered and included in the mainstream economy."

The Midrand Local Economic Empowerment (MLEE) believes positioning Midrand as an investment destination of choice will greatly benefit local communities.

Secretary General Lisa Tele says during this economic downturn, their organisation is a vital hub for all small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs).

The organisation will help small businesses identify opportunities for growth and development.

“It is very important to promote growth and development of the organisation for the people of Midrand and ensure their competitiveness,” said Tele.

Midrand Local Economic Empowerment has over 300 small businesses as affiliated members. They encompass various industries such as construction, catering, events management, security, project management and engineering.

The group was established in July 2017.

According to Tele they actively engage large national corporations and local businesses to partner with them to encourage developments in the area. “We organised sessions with the Minister of Economic Development, Minister of Small Business Development here in Midrand to engage with SMMEs.”

She says they have been involved in socio-economic activities where they empower youth in the communities.

Tele concluded that during the Covid-19 pandemic, they helped various communities with food parcels and other needs.
