Wave Rhyder makes waves in Africa

Thato Molupe happy to see that his song receives positive reaction from fans and hope it will help his fans not to give up or lose hope in life.

Thato Molupe’s single, Wa Nkutlwa Na [Can you hear me?], saw him get his first acknowledgment at the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) in the Best Male Artist in African Inspirational Music category.

AFRIMA is an annual awards event established by the International Committee AFRIMA, in collaboration with the African Union to reward and celebrate musical work, talent and creativity around the African continent while promoting the African cultural heritage.

Thato Molupe vows to continue to work hard as his music career takes shape after AFRIMA nomination.

The Waterfall City-based artist, affectionately known as Wave Rhyder, described his nomination to the awards as a dream come true for him.

Molupe, 23, cannot wait to be backstage with his favourite African musicians WizKid and Nigerian superstar Davido, who also received nominations.

He said although he did not expect the song to be such a hit when he composed it, he put in hard work, dedication and emotion into it.

“As an artist, you always want your work to be recognised. And when I went to the studio to record, I wanted the song to be good, but I honestly did not expect such a response. It’s definitely beyond my expectations,” said Molupe.

Thato Molupe aka Wave Rhyder credits hard work for his AFRIMA nomination.

The track, Wa Nkutlwa Na has over 58 million views on Tik-Tok.

The song is for those who are on the verge of giving up because life is not how they imagined it would be.

In the song, the Lesotho-born artist can be heard conveying a strong message to God, saying he feels as if his prayers are not heard and wonders when He will hear him and change his situation.

He said this was the biggest highlight of his music career so far and described what he was going through when he wrote the song.

“As people, we go through a lot, but we should not give up because things will eventually be alright. I was thinking about where I come from, and it got me thinking about how many people were going through the same thing. I just knew that people would resonate with the lyrics. I just want people not to give up or lose hope in life.”

He said he hopes the song becomes a reminder that it may be rough now, but soon all will be in the past. Wa Nkutlwa Na was Molupe’s third single.

The awards ceremony will be held in Nigeria on December 10.
