Director of fundraising at Love Trust’s Foundation, Charmaine Gola believes a hungry child cannot learn.
Gola emphasised that healthy eating is imperative as it supports the learners’ physical and mental development after KFC Gunret Foods franchise’s visit to Nokuphila School in President Park on October 31.
She said they always appreciate and encourage visitors to interact with the school even though they are in a learning environment. “The children at our school are existing beneficiaries of the KFC Add Hope initiative,” said Gola.
“On the day of the visit, the KFC team brought lunchtime snacks for our learners and hosted a mini-cricket clinic in partnership with KFC Mini-Cricket and the DP World Lions Women team. All learners were taught how to play mini-cricket and received two sets of mini-cricket equipment to continue playing long after the team has left.”
She said the young learners enjoyed themselves and were excited to learn how to play mini-cricket. Nokuphila provides learners with two meals and two snacks daily during their time at school. “For some of our learners, this is the only nutritious meal they receive daily due to the challenging circumstances at home. This is just one way we support our learners daily and not only during the month of September. We are grateful to donors like the Add Hope initiative for their ongoing support of our school’s nutrition programme.”
Members from KFC restaurants around Midrand attended the visit. Marketing manager brand at KFC South Africa Andra Nel said World Hunger Month serves as a strong reminder about not only access to food but also its potential to fight social ills. “Hunger is the gatekeeper to solving many other societal challenges since a hungry child can’t grow, learn or thrive. In adulthood, the effects of malnutrition result in individuals under-performing and not contributing to society as much as their potential should allow,” said Nel.
Nel hoped that the Add Hope donations would reach the 500 million mark by 2030 having served more than 250 million meals since its inception.
