Gauteng Community Safety MEC Faith Mazibuko visited Region A’s Ivory Park, Ebony Park, Allandale and Kaalfontein to address issues of gender-based violence.

About 70 people accompanied Mazibuko holding placards and demonstrating in the streets of Allandale to address the ever-increasing scourge on December 3. The aim was to target areas where young women hang out and eventually become casualties. Mazibuko also distributed flyers to the public and motorists.

She said the danger was that sometimes women become vulnerable after hanging out with strangers in places of alcohol. “We wish to urge men to walk away from a situation that will make them add to the high numbers of gender-based violence. We need to work together with all communities, especially men who abuse and kill women. One life lost, is one too many and it must come to an end,” said Mazibuko.

The 16-days of Activism Against Women and Children Abuse is an annual campaign, which runs from November 25 until December 16. It is aimed at educating the community at large about the negative effects of gender-based violence.

Mazubuko said they want to educate all women not to put their lives in danger by using men to buy them alcohol. “The men who buy you alcohol will want a ‘payback’. So, it is always advisable, that when you’re a woman, take care of yourself and use your own money to buy alcohol. Shebeens and taverns are the biggest contributors to GBV and this has been proven statistically. We urge women to refrain from using men’s monies,” concluded Mazibuko.
