Projects and issues in Ward 132 get discussed with stakeholders and community members

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) held a community meeting with Ward 132 residents to discuss the Vorna Valley Vlei rehabilitation project and other upcoming projects in the area on February 9.

The three-phased rehabilitation project of the wetland located between Allandale Road and Harry Galaun Drive entered its second phase in October last year. According to JRA acting CEO Louis Nel, water energy breakers and siltation traps would be constructed on Allandale Road, Harry Gaulan Drive and Le Roux Avenue.

The first phase, completed in the 2021/22 financial year, addressed erosion in the pre-existing channel through the installation of gabion baskets and the construction of erosion holes between Le Roux Avenue and Harry Galaun Drive.
The stakeholders for this project include Lonerock Construction, Mayibuye Construction, Mapoxe Consultants, Shoni Safety Consultants, and Francois Barnard Environment.
At the meeting which took place at Calvary Methodist Church in Midrand, the site manager for the project, George Mafokeng of Lonerock discussed the progress of the project to the community members including the challenges they were facing such as the current weather conditions.

He said the project was anticipated to be completed by June this year and so far 40% of the work had been completed.
Concerns raised by community members at the meeting included a request that the site manager and the community liaison officer checked the fence that had been allegedly vandalised by people who had erected shacks alongside Allandale Road.

Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe promised that all the raised concerns would be attended to and feedback provided in the next meeting.
