Lory Park Animal and Owl Sanctuary continue to fight for tigers in SA
There is a huge difference between keeping a tiger privately and keeping a tiger in an accredited facility.
Lory Park Animal and Owl Sanctuary write:
Tigers remain one of the most endangered species on the planet.
They face numerous threats in the wild but some programmes are giving new hope to tigers and their habitat.
Unfortunately, owning and keeping tigers privately in South Africa has become a common occurrence. With Sheba fresh in our hearts, the urgency to create awareness has never been so present.
South African law allows for tigers to be kept as private pets. There is no legislation for these animals which simply means anyone can own them.
Working with big cats is not something that just anyone should do. Things can go wrong very quickly. This is a huge responsibility.
Tigers require intensive husbandry and enrichment. They have needs that are often not met in the hands of the inexperienced. We see situations where the animals just do not receive the care they need. Often as a result of ignorance and not lack of trying but unfortunately the animal pays every time.
There is a huge difference between keeping a tiger privately and keeping a tiger in an accredited captive facility. Accredited facilities have the experience to care for these animals correctly and they are given the very best lives. Accredited facilities are just that – approved for their safety, their husbandry, their welfare, and all other aspects. Private holders are not.
Tigers that are kept as pets often have genetic issues as the breeding of these animals for this market is based solely on what income can be made from them, much like puppy mills. This in no way contributes to the conservation of this species, as these animals are not genetically viable to assist in any form of conservation.
Tigers are not pets, they are incredibly dangerous animals who demand respect. Lory Park stands strongly against the keeping of tigers as pets and the breeding of these animals for the pet trade.
