The IIE’s Varsity College recently hosted a competition for its students to write a story on their library experience.
The competition formed part of the campus’ Information Centre’s recent celebration of the South African Library Week (SALW) from March 20-26.
The campus information centre aimed to create an understanding of the importance of libraries and the vital role libraries play in society when it celebrated the week-themed “Libraries: telling powerful stories” by the SALW.
Students were encouraged to enter and write a story on how libraries have had a positive impact on their lives.
Arnold Tabudi Malepe, a second-year Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching student said his first library experience was back in 2020.
“I had to complete a research project and saved up some of my lunch money which I used to catch a taxi into town to go to the Burgersfort Public Library. To access so many available resources was a thrill. Now I visit the campus information centre almost every day. It provides me with a peaceful environment to study and offers many physical and online resources.”
Malepe won the prize for the best story about his library experience.
