Ramola Makan partners with Elba to make great Indian Cuisine

Author of the first Indian microwave cookbook Ramola Makan hosts a cooking demonstration to share some of her Indian recipes. The event was at the Hirsch’s in Waterfall.

Makan is a well-known Indian Cuisine specialist and the author of five cookbooks.

Her first book was launched 30 years ago and was the world’s first microwave cookbook.

Makan worked with Panasonic in the appliance division which included microwaves, bread makers, and other kitchen appliances. She was also the face of Panasonic, “I was doing cooking dims throughout the country.”

About 18 years ago Makan joined Elba. Elba is an Italian company, and they brand all Hirsch stores.

The cookbook author works with Elba which specialises in gas cooking. This is after they realise that gas cooking is becoming popular in South Africa.

Makan shared her recipe and gave some cooking tips to people who attended the event.

Some of the cooking tips is that she doesn’t use onions when she cooks.

“Onion is not good for spices, it creates a lot of water and makes food be sour.”

With her experience in the kitchen Makan said people should know their spices, and know exactly when to use them.

Food prepared during the event was served and, on the menu, there was, mint& pomegranate raaita, creamy tomato sauce, paneer makhani and easy naan bread.

Terrance Koma said he enjoyed the food and learnt a lot about Indian spices and that they are different chillies.

There was a competition where Makan gave away two of her cookbooks.

Elsie James won the cookbook titled At Home with Hirsch’s.

“I am so glad I was invited, it was a lovely morning and the cooking demonstration was excellent.”

“I am definitely trying out the recipe that are in the book,” added James.

Makan thanked everyone who spend the morning with her and hopes they will share their dish when trying the recipe.
