6000 youth to be equipped with energy sector skills

The training will provide learners with credit-bearing programmes on solar photovoltaic microgrids and will cover areas such as installation among others.

In response to the country’s energy crisis and youth unemployment, the Gauteng Provincial Government encourages all Gauteng youth to apply for the newly launched free Solar Installation Training Programme.

The government in partnership with the Manufacturing, Engineering, and Related Services Sector Education and Training Authority (merSETA) has established a training and skills development programme aimed at empowering young people with skills in the energy sector.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi announced the training programme on May 4 during a media briefing in Midrand.

The programme will be implemented over three years, with an intake of 6 000 learners. However, they will not be trained all at once but will be done in stages.

“The training will provide learners with credit-bearing programmes on solar photovoltaic microgrids and will cover areas such as installation, maintenance, and repair of different aspects related to solar energy concentrating on hybrid SPV systems,” Lesufi explained.

He said it is a sustainable programme as it will also provide learners with business and entrepreneurial skills designed to help them start new businesses in the growing energy sector.

“Applicants must have matriculated in a Gauteng school after 2016. N3+ electrical qualification from Tvet college, and/or technical matric is an added advantage. Ideally, applicants must also have an interest in a career in energy efficiency, electrical work, and the green economy sector.”

Resident Caroline Matlou applauded the programmes and said it is a worthwhile initiative. “It is an investment in our society. If you have a skill no one will take that skill from you,” said Matlou.

Although some youth are excited about the programme, some still feel left out despite also being youth.

Bongani Mgubela said, “I for one find these requirements absurd. What about those who matriculated before 2016 and are still under 35? It is completely illogical.”

Details: Application opens on May 8 – June 8 and applicants can send their applications to GCRA.wfd@gauteng.gov.za or SAYouth.Mobi
