City Power begins with the normalisation of smart meters in Mayibuye

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena expressed his appreciation for the commitment made by most of Ward 110 residents to pay for their electricity usage.

The normalisation of smart meters in Mayibuye has commenced, and residents can expect a stable and reliable supply of electricity soon.

City Power initiated the project on November 6, following several engagements with Ward 110 councillor Angie Mphaho and her leadership.
To educate residents on how the meters function, City Power hosted an educational campaign on October 28 in Mayibuye Park.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena expressed his appreciation for the commitment by most residents to pay for their electricity usage.

However, Mangena expressed concern that only one business in Mayibuye paid for its electricity consumption, while the utility has spent millions of rands maintaining and replacing vandalised mini-substations, pole-mounted transformers and stolen cables in the area.

City Power said this project was part of a larger one by the City of Joburg.

“Every resident must be smart-metered to help us address the issue of load-shedding and prepare its systems and network for the TID [Token Identifier] rollover in November next year,” said Mangena.

“The new recharge units will only work with compatible smart meters, so every resident must be smart-metered.”

After completing the normalisation project in Mayibuye, City Power will proceed to Rabie Ridge, Klipfontein, and Kanana extensions four and five in the Midrand SDC area and other areas across the city.

Meters are already being installed in areas such as Alexandra, Mondeor, Fleurhof, and Randburg, among many others, according to Mangena.

Mphaho urged residents to support the project and not vandalise the city’s infrastructure.
