MPHS confirms that they’ve taken in learners from closed New World Institute

Sharira Padayachy, deputy principal at Midlands Primary and High School says its fortunate that they used the curriculum with New World Institute.

The deputy principal of the Midlands Primary and High School (MPHS) confirmed to the paper that they were indeed approached by the Gauteng Department of Education to assist the parents and learners of New World Institute (NWI).

The illegal school from Carlswald was closed down by the department on November 3 after it was found non-compliant.
MPHS deputy principal Sharira Padayachy said in the spirit of Ubuntu, they have extended a helping hand to the department, parents and learners who have been traumatised by the chain of events that have led to them being vulnerable and helpless.

“Our current classrooms, which can take a capacity of 30 learners, were not filled to their maximum capacity. This allowed us to take in the additional learners from New World Institute and house them in our current classrooms. We also have additional empty classrooms which we kept aside as a contingency plan,” said Padayachy.

She said fortunately NWI and MPHS use the same curriculum, which is the CAPS curriculum so they did not have much of a challenge with learners needing to adapt to a brand new curriculum so late into the year.

Padayachy added that they further assessed the learners’ books and have, in a very short space, set up an examination programme that will focus on areas where they have been taught in. This exam will run concurrently with Midland Primary and High School exams.

“The pressure this has put on our staff is great. We are fortunate to have accommodating teachers, all of whom are ready to jump in and assist the private school learners wherever possible. Our vision and mission is to learn, inspire and achieve, we believe in nurturing every learner, entrusted to us, unique potential”.

Padayachy concluded that they want to provide quality education to all learners, and we see this as an opportunity to do exactly what we set out to do 10 years ago at the inception of MPHS.
