Glen Austin High School learner believes her hard work will propel her to greater heights

Minenhle Shelembe (17) says it is her first time ever being part of the Representative Council of Learners on her school journey.

A Grade 11 Glen Austin High School learner and a prefect secretary describes herself as a hard worker and hopes to become a chartered accountant or actuarial scientist.
Minenhle Shelembe (17), who lives in Kempton Park, says she has a bubbly personality and is a hard worker.

She says what makes her tick is hard work, and believes that doing everything with dedication and determination leads to success and victory.

Her hard work includes being the first, first aider of the school and that has taught her a lot of leadership skills. “The key thing I have learnt is that, as a leader, do every task with responsibility and satisfactorily. Secondly, I have learnt that being a leader is about raising other leaders as well, leading by example in your day-to-day life. Thirdly, when you are a leader you need to be selfless and be available for others; helping them where you can.”
In September last year, Minenhle assisted with first aid during a sports day out of kindness. Little did she know that her effort would be rewarded by the school’s then principal Berhold Moyo who bestowed her with a voluntary certificate in first aid.

She said outside class she has always done first aid as an extramural activity while her peers participated in sports. “At home. however. I like listening to music. Outside school, I’m more or less the same as when I am at school. I think the only difference is that outside school I am a bit more comfortable than at school because I would be around my close friends and family.”

In October, she received three certificates, –one for academic Olympiads that she participated in, another for accounting and the latter for life science (medicine sector).
“I participated in these Olympiads because of my accounting teacher who has always mentioned that Olympiads are good to take part in. They teach you a lot of things about that particular subject and the experience of it is amazing. Indeed I can attest to that, it has been an academically stressful, yet amazing journey to experience

Minenhle will be prefect secretary for the 2023/24 prefects under the leadership of head prefect Aysha Kunene and deputy prefects, Tintswalo Mnisi and Thato Rampyapedi.
