Irene Midrand Pony Club raises R12 000 for Midrand SPCA

Irene Midrand Pony Club successfully raises R12 000 for the Midrand SPCA.

The Irene Midrand Branch of the South African Pony Club recently hosted a hugely successful training show which raised a combined total of R12 000 for the Midrand SPCA.

Monies raised included an impressive R10 800 from the show, as well as a very special contribution of R1 200 raised by a handful of pony clubbers themselves.

The club is an international voluntary youth organisation for young people interested in ponies and riding.

Thelma Fox, district commissioner of the Irene Midrand Pony Club said one of the driving factors behind the pony club is the care of animals and their welfare.

Irene Midrand Pony Club children Alexia Bento, Nina Kruger, and Sophie Rohrs show their fundraising badges.

“One of the primary badges our children and young adults have to attain is a fundraising badge. We have established a special relationship with the Midrand SPCA over the years and our members always go out of their way to find ways to support the charity.”

The show, which was hosted at Foxton Manor in Randjesfontein on January 12 and 13 included show jumping, dressage, working riding, and in-hand classes.

Riders of all ages and horses and ponies from all levels from both the Pony Club and the area took part, with an emphasis on training.

The event was attended by a special guest judge, well-known dressage instructor and judge Regula Niehus, who took the time to walk each rider through their tests and offer invaluable instruction during the time she spent with them.

Irene Midrand Pony Club members enjoy dressage as they carry out a series of controlled movements and patterns.

“A training show should always focus on training, providing horse and rider a positive experience. It is always so wonderful to see the riders grow in confidence,” said Fox.

The additional R1 200 raised by pony clubbers Jemima Rohrs and Isabel Munro, along with their school friend Rachel Page, came as a result of candles that the youngsters made themselves and then sold at their school fair in December at the Christmas market.

The ladies started their candle-making endeavours in June and by December had an impressive haul of Christmas-themed candles for sale.

“It makes me so proud that our members go out of their way, of their own accord, to give back to the Midrand SPCA. This shows the true spirit of pony club,” added Fox.

The Irene Midrand Branch of the South African Pony Club is officially one of the largest branches in South Africa. The club caters to members of all ages and riders up to 25 years can actively participate in club activities.
