A trip to remember for Glen Austin High learners
Glen Austin High School teacher says this was an amazing experience for both teachers and learners.
Their suitcases were packed, and the Glen Austin High School learners, and teachers, were on the bus and off to explore the new horizons that lay before them.
The excursion, named the South African Development Community (SADC) trip, started on June 27 with a fun-filled day at Rustenburg’s Sun City, swimming in the waves, zip-lining, and other enjoyable activities.
English and Afrikaans teacher at the school Jennifer Wodrich said, that night was their last stop in South Africa.

“The next day, bright and early, we headed off to the border of Botswana, and then on to Gaborone. The border post was an experience in itself. To step over the line separating South Africa and Botswana was a thrill. The children were amazed that, in a few short hours, they were in a ‘foreign’ country,” said Wodrich.
She said when they arrived in Gaberone, they were struck by the cleanliness of the city.
They then visited the museum before heading to overnight lodgings.
“Our next stop was Francistown, via the Tropic of Capricorn. The next morning, we had a packed breakfast for the road and a deadline to reach the city of Kasane by 14:00. Kasane is a town in the northeastern corner of Botswana, near the borders with Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. It’s the gateway to Chobe National Park.”

They made it to Kasane in time for a boat cruise. Then quickly dashed to the Zimbabwean border, and their lodgings for the night.
She said, visiting Victoria Falls was one of the biggest highlights, and words could not express such a spectacular sight.
They concluded the eight-day trip via Zambia, and then headed back to the border of Botswana. “We arrived safely in South Africa the next day, and arrived in Bela-Bela, for another round of swimming, tubing, and quad-biking.”
Everyone was exhausted, and home-sick, but filled with unique and wonderful experiences which would last a lifetime.
