Education department addresses broken toilets and windows at Dulcie September Primary School

Steve Mabona, Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson, says the school has been provided with 20 chemical toilets in the interim, while the department looks into the sewerage system.

The Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson, Steve Mabona, said they are aware of the situation at Dulcie September Primary School in Rabie Ridge, Midrand.

This follows the paper’s article, Angry parents chase principal away, [week ending January 24], following a resident, Shaida Sutton, who reported an alarming state of disrepair at the school.

The container classrooms have broken windows and the toilets for the young learners are smelly, unhygienic, and without privacy. The broken windows are covered with bin plastic in an attempt to prevent rain from entering the classrooms.

Mabona said an assessment was conducted to address the problem with the school’s sewerage system. “In the interim, the school was provided with 20 chemical toilets to address the problem. Accordingly, the school has a maintenance budget to fix small items like windows,” said Mabona.

The angry parents chased away the principal on January 15 after a number of issues led to the school being unkempt.

“Regarding the allegations against the principal at the school, the matter is still under investigation and the outcome thereof will be communicated in due course. It must be noted that the Schools Governing Body can only be capacitated and supported to do their work,” added Mabona.

He confirmed that there were no reports of burglaries at the said school during the festive season.

“We will continue to monitor the situation and intervene accordingly,” concluded Mabona.
