Midrand residents urged to strengthen home security amid rise in robberies

There has been a sharp increase in house break-ins and armed robberies across Midrand, particularly in Halfway House, with criminals targeting portable electronics.

Residents of Midrand are being urged to step up their home security following a concerning rise in burglaries and armed robberies over the past week, especially in the Halfway House area. The criminals are mainly targeting easy-to-grab electronic devices such as laptops, smartphones, iPads, and tablets, making these crimes quick and opportunistic.

Charnel Hattingh, the group head of marketing and communications at Fidelity ADT, explained that criminals are becoming increasingly bold and using different tactics to lure residents out of their homes. Whether it’s when you’re heading out for dinner or watching a match; it’s vital to ensure your alarm system is activated and your property is as secure as possible.

The recent spike in crime highlights how important it is for homeowners to be vigilant. Many of these crimes happen within minutes, often exploiting unsecured perimeters. If burglars can’t get into your house or business, they may still take what they can from your property or parked cars nearby. It’s a stark reminder that a secure perimeter can make all the difference.

To help residents safeguard their homes, Hattingh offers some practical tips. She recommends fitting perimeter doors with sturdy locks, adding bolts or spacers to sliding doors to prevent them from being lifted off their tracks, and making sure all windows are fitted with locks or burglar bars covering the glass. She also advises locking away duplicate keys, keeping garages and sheds locked when not in use, and installing outside lighting that can be controlled remotely or activated by motion sensors. Trimming heavy foliage around perimeter walls can also reduce hiding spots for intruders, and having panic buttons for staff like domestic workers or gardeners adds an extra layer of security.

In case of a robbery, Hattingh advises staying calm and obedient, keeping your hands visible, and avoiding any attempt to negotiate or resist. Giving the robbers what they ask for, observing their appearance discreetly, and relaying clear information to police or security responders can help in the aftermath. Once safe, immediately contact your response team or dial 10111, lock all doors, and check on any victims calmly, providing detailed information to authorities.

Hattingh emphasises the importance of making sure your alarm system is in working order and activated at all times. She also advises residents to remain alert while driving in the area. If you suspect you’re being followed, don’t turn into your driveway, drive instead to the nearest police station, security point, or busy area. Always open gates only when you’re sure it’s safe to do so and close them immediately afterwards.

This rise in burglaries serves as a reminder that staying vigilant and proactive can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim. By taking these simple precautions, residents can better protect themselves, their families, and their property against opportunistic criminals.
